Often when someone is told their child inherited their good temperament/beauty/intelligence, that parent is pleased. I never understood that. After all, the parent didn't choose their own genes, which genes were passed on, or which genes were expressed. In fact, the only relevant choice the parent made was of the
other parent. So if you compliment some positive aspects of my child that may have come from me, it's really a compliment for the other parent for choosing me, and vice versa.
