Syria in the Gulf War

Syria had 14,500 troops in Operation Desert Storm. Theirs was the 6th largest contingent. All this time I had thought that Syria and Iraq were pals. I've had the wrong idea for 17 years.

Haven't Syria and Iran been close allies for a while? Certain in the early 90's there was no love between Iran and Iraq.

Syria and Iraq had a lot going on too. Remember all those conspiracy theories that the missing WMDs were in Syria? Its proponents were grasping at straws, but their claims nonetheless had some basis. There was much smuggling across the border during the period of UN sanctions. Also, Syria was led by the Ba'athist party as well; in fact, there was apparently some talk of the two nations merging in the late 1970s. I guess that's kind of like how Egypt and Syria were briefly in a political union.
