Easy ways to encourage saving gas

"Gallons per mile" is more intuitive than "miles per gallon".

One thing I'd like to see is a real-time mileage (gallonage?) display in every new car. Some new cars come with them, like the Toyota Prius (obviously) and the Honda CR-V (less obviously). Driving habits can make a huge difference. Giving people instant feedback is a lot more likely to alter driving habits than giving a bunch of tips. That and shock collars for people who keep their foot on the gas when the light ahead is no longer green.

Luckily any car in the past 10 years or so comes with an OBDII port that feeds that sort of data out. One can buy cheap devices to read it.

It has to be easier than that. People can do that now, but they don't. They don't realize how much driving style affects mileage, so it doesn't even occur to them to investigate this.

You can certainly attempt an education campaign, but that faces the same problems as an education campaign to directly change driving habits.

There is a gadget that will not reduce your gas mileage but if you have a business it will help you deduct 58.5 cents per mile. This gadget can be found at www.mileagelogger.com and it logs your mileage automatically, no need for pen and paper. IRS just increased the mileage rate from 50.5 to 58.5 cents per mile so you can deduct more money for your business.
